Solid Code Theme Editor

Update 17/05/12: Added Ace Editor Syntax Highlighter for line numbers and overall coolness

An enhanced theme editor plugin for WordPress with a tree view of all theme sub folders and the ability to download files and also download the whole theme as a ZIP file…

Sometimes as part of working on a WordPress theme or doing a change to an existing site, I find myself needing to make a small change on one of the files – but since most of my themes include special files (like JS and extra CSS files) I cannot reach them on the regular Theme Editor – so I decided to make a better one myself, which allows me to do this extra bits.

You can get the plugin using this link – plugin home page

Features and highlights:

  • View any theme files in a tree view structure (including sub directories)
  • View all files (not just PHP and CSS)
  • Edit the following file extensions: PHP, CSS, JS, XML, HTML, HTM, TXT, SQL
  • Syntax Highlighter and line numbers
  • Download a ZIP backup of the whole theme
  • Download individual files

And the line numbers? Did you forget them?

Hey Terence, not sure what you mean… adding line numbers to the editor itself??? sounds like a good idea – I’ll look into it

Great plugin, I love it. I started using child themes and seems I am not able to edit any files in the child theme folder. Only files from the parent theme show in the editor.

Hey William, thanks… this plugin only works on the Active theme so will not show any child themes if you have any.
However you can always activate the child theme – then you will get access to its files and once updated you can re-activate your main theme…

this is so frustrating…. hey sorry, let me first say, thnx for the plugin is really cool. now back to my frustration. i search for a inside editor with folder capability (like this one) but doesnt have numbers and look for css sometimes are pretty long sheets. i wish i could combine plugins. this one with maybe Advance Editor or WPEdit or something else. yo mate this plugin is trulla asome but if you just add line numbers and i mean to know the line of code number, like dreamweaver it will be my fav plugin ever =)

dont take me wrong, it frustrare me but so far i stick with this one even if doesnt have numbers.

thnx again, think about that number thingy =)

Hey sugartoys… I understand your frustration, I’ve been asked a few times to add some more functionality to the editor itself (like line numbers. code highlighting etc…) and I am looking into it so when I get a bit of spare time I will upgrade the plugin.
